Welcome

to the website of the Anglican parish of St George-in-the-East with St Paul, proud to serve a diverse and rapidly-changing community in London's East End.

We are between the City and Docklands, along The Highway - click here for a local map.

The area includes extremes of wealth and deprivation, and has been home to many generations of immigrant groups (the majority now are Bengali), alongside lifelong East Enders, and City professionals.

We are a parish of the
Diocese of London in the Stepney Episcopal Area and the Deanery of Tower Hamlets, working with other Christians of many traditions and denominations. We are 'clustered' with St Mary Cable Street, St Paul Shadwell, St Peter London Docks and St Dunstan & All Saints Stepney.

Our parish school is St Paul's Whitechapel CE Primary School.

As you will discover from this site, the parish has a rich and fascinating history, with many stories to tell - there are lots of links to more detailed sources of information.

More important, we are a living church, with a mission for the 21st century.

A recent comment on this site comes from
Joel Pullin, who attended worship here in August 2011. He says St George-in-the-East’s history is unbelievably vast and the church’s website is like an online library dedicated to a single building. In comparison to other Hawksmoor churches' websites, the flash graphic design of Christ Church at Spitalfields website or the user friendly format of St Anne's, St George's is more interested in historical substance than online style. The website is a sprawling labyrinth of information and a testament of love to the church’s history. Quite right: while we apologise that our site is graphically amateurish, it is indeed passionate about the rich history of our patch!
